How Often Should a Dryer Vent Be Cleaned?

The short answer: once a year for most homes. That single number covers a typical south-metro household running four to eight loads a week through a vent run under 25 feet.
The longer answer depends on how much laundry you do, how long and twisted your vent run is, whether you have pets, and whether the property is owner-occupied or rented. Here is how we set intervals for homes in Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Parker, and the rest of the south metro.
Cleaning frequency by household
1-2 person household
Light laundry volume and a short vent run. One cleaning every year and a half usually keeps airflow where it should be.
Family of 3-5
The most common south-metro scenario. Four to eight loads a week builds enough lint to restrict airflow within a year.
Large family or 8+ loads a week
High-volume laundry, towels, and bedding shed heavily. Annual cleaning is often too late for these homes.
Pets in the home
Pet hair binds with lint and packs into elbows faster than lint alone. Shorten the interval if you have shedding breeds.
Long or rooftop vent runs
Runs over 25 feet or with multiple elbows trap lint at every turn. Common in newer Parker, Castle Rock, and Castle Pines builds.
Rentals, HOAs & multi-family
Tenants rarely report slow drying. Scheduled annual or semi-annual cleaning protects the building and documents due diligence.

Why south Denver homes need it more often
Colorado's dry air and static make lint cling to duct walls instead of blowing through, so buildup happens faster here than in humid climates.
Newer subdivisions across Parker, Castle Rock, and Castle Pines also place laundry rooms on upper floors and in interior walls, which means longer duct runs with more elbows. Every elbow is a place lint settles.
Add a few months of winter when the dryer runs more and windows stay closed, and a vent that would last 18 months elsewhere often needs service inside a year here.
How often should dryer vents be cleaned?+
For a typical single-family home, once every 12 months. Households with heavy laundry volume, pets, or long vent runs should clean every 6-9 months. Rentals and multi-family buildings are best on a scheduled 6-12 month program.
How often should clothes dryer vents be cleaned if I only do a few loads a week?+
If you run fewer than three loads a week and your vent run is short, every 18 months is usually fine. Still watch drying times - if a normal load starts needing extra time, clean it sooner regardless of the calendar.
Is cleaning the lint trap enough?+
No. The lint screen catches only part of the lint; the rest travels into the duct and settles in elbows and along the run. The lint that causes fires and slow drying is inside the duct, which needs professional equipment to remove.
How long does a dryer vent cleaning take?+
Most single-family cleanings take 45 to 90 minutes depending on vent length, access, and how much buildup we find. We work in 30 minute arrival windows so you are not waiting around.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?+
A brush kit can pull some lint from the first few feet, but it typically pushes the rest deeper and cannot reach elbows or vertical runs. We use negative-air extraction with a camera scope so you can see the duct is actually clear.
What happens if a dryer vent is never cleaned?+
Airflow drops, the dryer runs hotter and longer, the heating element and motor wear out early, and lint accumulates against a heat source. Failure to clean dryer vents is the leading cause of dryer fires reported by the U.S. Fire Administration.
Do new homes need dryer vent cleaning?+
